Multicoloured Banknote Series (1969 - 1975)

In 1969, the release of a completely new and modern series of Canadian notes began. The Bank of Canada, because of the increased circulation of counterfeit notes of the 1954 series, was concerned with producting notes that would be virtually impossible to counterfeit. The most advanced security features available were incorporated into the new designs while maintaining a high artistic standard. The updated style of this series includes multicoloured printing with deeper engravings to give the notes more of a 'feel'.

Design

The Bank of Canada's $2 note features Queen Elizabeth II on one side and Inuit preparing for a hunt on the reverse. Note is composed primarily in terra cotta colour. The face of each denomination displays the multicoloured Canadian Coat of Arms and a red serial number on the left half, while a black portrait is on the right with the serial number repeated in blue. For the first time since the 1937 issue, portraits of former Canadian Prime Ministers replace that of the ruling British monarch on some denominations.
