1900 Dominion of Canada 25-Cent Shinplaster Courtney Fractional Note

Released in 1900, the American Bank Note Company (ABNC) added the 25-cent to to the denomination of Dominion notes it was preparing on behalf of the government. This is the second issue of the 25-cent shinplasters redesigned to feature a seated Britannia figure with trident and shield. Due to a loss of records covering the period from 1914 to 1921, the total number of 1900 25-cent notes issued is unavailable. However, of the remaining periods, over 5 million notes were issued. Many of these notes are still quite common today and decent enough examples can be had for less than $50.

The banks were opposed to the introduction of paper "shinplasters," but the fact that they were redeemable in gold when presented in quantity went a long way toward making the fractional notes acceptable.

Design

A black and white frame with decorative shapes including the value of the banknote: "25" & "TWENTY FIVE CENTS". On the left, the inscription "The Dominion of Canada" accompanied by the value of the note "25" & "TWENTY FIVE CENTS" as well as the date and signature. On the right, an allegory of a seated Britannia holding a shield and a trident with a sailing ship in the background. At the bottom, the printer of the banknote.

The note's reverse depicts a composition based on decorative shapes and the value of the banknote : "25 CENTS".
