1870 Dominion of Canada 25-Cent Shinplaster Series Plain Fractional Note

The initial Series A and B issues of 1870 notes were composed of approximately 4,300,000 notes printed. These notes were not issued with serial numbers or check digits.
While the 3rd group of these notes printed only made up a total of 300,000 notes, which are still, to this day, the most common variety. The initial "series A" notes are by far the rarest and command well over $100 for even poor examples.

The banks were opposed to the introduction of paper "shinplasters," but the fact that they were redeemable in gold when presented in quantity went a long way toward making the fractional notes acceptable.

Design

A black and white frame with decorative shapes including the value of the banknote: "25" & "TWENTY FIVE CENTS". In the center, a portrait of Britannia wearing a spear on her shoulder and a helmet on her head. Above her, the inscription "The Dominion of Canada" and on either side the value of the banknote "25" & "TWENTY FIVE CENTS", as well as the signatures and date. At the bottom, the printer of the note.

The note's reverse depicts a composition based on decorative forms. In the center, the lettering:
REDEEMABLE ON PRESENTATION AT MONTREAL . TORONTO OR ST. JOHN .
