2011-P United States 25-Cent Chickasaw/Oklahoma National Park Quarter Coin (Brilliant Uncirculated)

In 2010, the United States Mint began issuing 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program.

The 2011 Chickasaw National Recreation Area Quarter will be issued by the US Mint on November 14, 2011 as the tenth release of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program®. It honors the site in Oklahoma and also marks the fifth of five quarter dollars to be issued by the US Mint during the year.

The Chickasaw National Recreation Area was originally established as Sulphur Springs Reservation on July 1, 1902. After a couple of name changes and being combined with another national area, it assumed its current title on March 17, 1976.

Almost 10,000 acres of land are now a part of the recreation area, but it was originally established with a relatively small 640 acres purchased from the Chickasaw Indian Nation, from which it gets its name. Part of that original purchase agreement required the government to not charge an admission fee to the area, which remains true today.

Design

Obverse:
John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington (modified by William Cousins) is featured on the obverse. Also seen are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark.

Reverse:
AIP Master Designer Donna Weaver designed the reverse of the Chickasaw Quarter which was sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Jim Licaretz. It shows the Lincoln Bridge, a famous landmark of the recreation area. Surrounding the bridge scene are the inscriptions of "CHICKASAW," "OKLAHOMA," "2011" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
