In 2010, the United States Mint began issuing 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program.

The 2011 Glacier National Park Quarter honors the park found in the state of Montana and will appear as the seventh strike in the US Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters Program®. The Glacier Quarter is the second quarter dollar to appear for the year and has a release date of April 4, 2011.

This specific quarter honors Glacier National Park of Montana which was established as such on May 11, 1910. The park consists of over 1 million acres and was originally established as a national forest preserve in 1897 at the behest of officials of the Great Northern Railway.

The railway saw the location as a perfect tourist destination for its customers and felt that national protection was a means of insuring its continued beauty. The railroad is also responsible for creating several of the historic lodges and chalets which are still in use today and found in or near the park.

Design

Obverse:
John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington (modified by William Cousins) is featured on the obverse. Also seen are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark.

Reverse:
Designed by AIP Associate Designer Barbara Fox and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles Vickers, the reverse of the Glacier National Park Quarter shows a creature seen as iconic for the park, a mountain goat. The goat is seen traversing the difficult terrain of the park with majestic Mount Reynolds depicted in the distance. Surrounding the scene are the inscriptions of "GLACIER," "MONTANA," "2011" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
