2014 Canadian $1 Olympic Lucky Loonie Dollar Coin (Brilliant Uncirculated)

In what is now a legendary tale, a Canadian icemaker embedded a Loonie at centre ice prior to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City to bring good luck to Canada’s gold medal-winning men's and women's hockey teams.
In 2004, the Royal Canadian Mint created the first Lucky Loonie as a way of passing on its special magic to Canadian athletes as they departed for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

The Royal Canadian Mint is proud to issue Canada's latest commemorative circulation coin, the 2014 Lucky Loonie. The coin was unveiled on January 11, 2014, at the Canadian Olympic Team's Sochi Block Party event in Banff by Blake Richards, MP for Wild Rose, Christine Aquino, Director of Communications and Public Affairs at the Royal Canadian Mint, Steve Podborski, Sochi 2014 Chef de Mission and Jean-Luc Brassard, Assistant Chef de Mission.

Design

The obverse design features a bust image of Queen Elizabeth II and the phrase "ELIZABETH II D.G. REGINA". The current year resides just below the bust. In June 2003, the Government of Canada announced that an updated effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II would appear on all Canadian circulation coins in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Queen's coronation. This design is the work of artist Susanna Blunt, whose prior experience with Buckingham Palace included painting a portrait of Prince Edward.

The reverse, designed by Emily Damstra, features the iconic loon as it spreads its majestic wings while sitting on rippling Canadian lake waters. The coin also features the Canadian Olympic Team logo, in celebration and support of Canada’s athletes as they compete at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic & Paralympic Games. On the outer periphery are the words "CANADA" and "DOLLAR".
