In 2010, the United States Mint began issuing 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park quarter is the first of 2014 and the 21st overall in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. This national park features wondrous biodiversity, with ridge upon ridge of forest straddling the border between Tennessee and North Carolina. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is world renowned for its diverse plant and animal life, the beauty of its ancient mountains, and the quality of its remnants of southern Appalachian mountain culture. It is America’s most-visited national park. It was first established as a national site on May 22, 1926 (44 Stat. 616).
Design
Obverse:
John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington (modified by William Cousins) is featured on the obverse. Also seen are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark.
Reverse:
Central to the reverse of the quarters and coins is a historic log cabin found within the boundaries of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A hawk is seen circling above. A lush green forest of the region is in the backdrop. Inscriptions surrounding the design include GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS, TENNESSEE, 2014 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Artistic credit for the image goes to Chris Costello with sculpting completed by Renata Gordon.
