2014-D United States 25-Cent Everglades/Florida National Parks Quarter Coin (Brilliant Uncirculated)
In 2010, the United States Mint began issuing 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program.
The Everglades National Park quarter is the fifth of 2014 and the 25th overall in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. It is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. Everglades National Park protects an unparalleled landscape that provides important habitat for numerous rare and endangered species like the manatee, American crocodile and elusive Florida panther. An international treasure as well, it is designated as a world heritage site, international biosphere reserve and wetland of international importance. It was first established as a national site on May 30, 1934 (48 Stat. 816).
Obverse design:
John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington (modified by William Cousins) is featured on the obverse. Also seen are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark.
Reverse design:
Two water birds are shown on the reverse design of the Everglades National Park quarter and five ounce silver coins. An anhinga in the foreground is depicted with outstretched wings on a willow tree while a roseate spoonbill is further in the distance. Reverse inscriptions include EVERGLADES, FLORIDA, 2014 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Joel Iskowitz designed the reverse image of the quarter dollar with Joseph Menna sculpting.
