Design

The reverse design by Canadian artist Glen Loates features a portrait of a bugling elk stag. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Canadian Rockies, the male elk is presented in profile from its left side. Its vast antlers are beautifully showcased as the elk raises its head to call to females and out-bid male rivals. The elk’s shaggy “mane,” large powerful chest, and sloping rump are engraved in extraordinary detail using various finishing techniques. The elk stands on a rocky outcropping. In the background, a river flows through tree-lined foothills and jagged snow-peaked mountains rise against the horizon. The reverse is engraved with the text “CANADA”, the date “2016”, and the face value of “100 DOLLARS”. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
