2019 Canadian $1 Big Coin Series: Flying Loon Dollar 5 oz Fine Silver & Gold-plated Coin
The Flying Loon dollar flies once more—this time, as a reverse gold-plated 5 oz. coin that is at least twice the size of the original. In 1997, Canada's beloved loonie celebrated its 10th anniversary. To mark the occasion, wildlife artist Jean-Luc Grondin created an alternate version of the coin's iconic reverse by depicting the loon splashing across the lake during take-off. The anniversary-themed image graced the reverse of the 1997 Proof Dollar, as well as a 1-dollar piece that was exclusive to the Oh Canada and 1997 Specimen sets. Grondin re-visited Canada's most famous loon in his design for the 2002 15th Anniversary of the Loon Dollar, as well as the 2006 and 2008 Lucky Loonie coins.

Design
The reverse features a reproduction of the design that graced the proof and specimen dollar coins issued in 1997. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Canada's 1-dollar circulation piece, Canadian artist Jean-Luc Grondin offered his own take on the iconic reverse by depicting the loon taking flight. Reverse gold plating fills the field while the coin's silver surface draws the eye to the engraved relief, which includes the words “CANADA” and “DOLLAR”, and the date “2019”. The reverse gold-plated obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
