The Royal Canadian Mint’s issuance of commemorative coins starting in 1973 to honor the 21st Olympiad to be held in Montreal, Quebec, was done to help finance the games. The RCM issued a total of 28 silver coins and 2 gold coins.
All of these 1976 $100 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Olympic Coins are available to you for purchase online with protective plastic bags. These coins were originally issued as Brilliant Uncirculated coins with 14-karat gold content. As such, these coins contain 1/2 Troy oz of .9166 gold content.
The obverse of each 1976 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Olympic Coin is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. This design is just the second-generation effigy from her reign and was created in 1965 by Arnold Machin.
The reverse side of the 1976 $100 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Olympic Coin features designs that harken back to the original version of the Olympic Games held by the Greeks. In this design, a Greek Olympian is featured receiving a laurel wreath crown from the goddess Pallas Athena, the goddess of war. Designed by Dora de Pedery-Hunt, the image includes a beaded border with dates honoring the first Ancient Olympic Games in 776 BCE and the 21st modern Summer Games in 1976.
