2000 Canadian 5-Cent Les Voltigeurs de Quebec First French-Canadian Regiment Silver Coin

Les Voltigeurs de Québec (First French Canadian Regiment) was created under the Militia Act (M.G.O.) of March 7, 1862, "The 9th Battalion Volunteer Militia Rifles" received it's French designation on May 22, 1863. It's first commanding officer was Lieutenant-Colonel C. René Léonidas d'Irumberry de Salaberry, son of the hero of the battle of Châteauguay (1813), and the unit quickly adopted his family motto (Force a superbe, mercy a foible) as it's own.

For over one hundred years, Les Voltigeurs de Québec has distinguished itself during the North-West Rebellion of 1885, two World Wars, as well as the Korean War under the aegis of the United Nations. It has also played a role in modern peacekeeping missions such as the one to the former Yugoslavia.

Also noteworthy is the regiment's military band which played "O' Canada" on June 24, 1880 -- the first time Canada's national anthem was heard.

Today, Les Voltiguers de Québec operates within the 35th Canadian Brigade Group and continues to occupy it's historic drill hall, "Manège militaire Voltigeurs de Québec", located on Parliament Hill in Québec City.

Design

The reverse of this coin portrays a baton, drums and sash -- each featuring the regimental insignia of Les Voltiguers de Québec. Originally used to alert troops during battle, drums were later used to establish marching tempos and assemble soldiers in temporary encampments.
