Various stories have been told over the centuries, and one of the most popular is the Kwakwaka’wakw legend of a man who ventured into the forest and came across a magical frog as large as a man. Copper shone from its mouth, and despite its ability to disappear, the frog allowed the man to vanquish it. With great effort, the man rolled the frog over and found a stack of copper shields underneath—a luxury reserved for the highest-ranking chiefs. He returned to his village and was lauded for his wealth and prestige.

Design:
Your coin was designed by Canadian K’ómoks and Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw artist Andy Everson who created a uniquely graphic portrait of the frog using the ancient formline art style of the Pacific Northwest combined with contemporary elements and a modern design aesthetic. Green bold lines define the contours of the frog while elements of the shield are executed in copper. In the background, wavy lines convey the ethereal essence of the forest.
