Much has changed since 1988, when the Silver Maple Leaf (SML) was first introduced to the world. Thirty-five years later, Canada’s bullion maple leaf appears untouched by time on our coins, where its natural beauty has been enhanced by different finishes and technologies over the years—including Ultra High Relief, as seen on this 5 oz. 99.99% pure silver coin. The coin’s reverse boasts an extraordinary peak relief height of 3 mm, where the shiny Ultra High Relief maple leaf is backed by a laser-engraved “SML anniversary” field pattern. Look closely and you’ll notice seven maple leaves with the number “35”—a pattern that repeats five times for a total of 35 mini SMLs that form each ring, or one leaf for every year since the first SML was issued.

The follow-up to the first 5 oz. UHR SML. Like the first 5 oz. Ultra High Relief (UHR) Silver Maple Leaf (SML) issued in 2022, this 2023 collector piece is crafted in 5 oz. of 99.99% pure silver and features Ultra High Relief on its reverse.
Ultra high. The reverse features a peak relief height of 3 mm—that’s significantly higher than the standard 0.80 mm you’d normally see on a piece this size.
A sought-after piece. The SML is one of our most popular annual offerings and the 2022 5 oz. UHR SML sold out quickly. For 2023, mintage is limited to 1,750 worldwide.
Includes serialized certificate. The Royal Canadian Mint certifies all of its collector coins.

Design
Your coin’s reverse features Walter Ott’s Silver Maple Leaf (SML) design. Struck in Ultra High Relief, the iconic maple leaf is backed by a unique laser-engraved field pattern that celebrates the SML’s 35ᵗʰ anniversary in 2023. Seven small maple leaves appear with the number “35” to form a pattern that repeats five times, for a total of 35 mini SMLs in each ring—one mini SML for each year since Canada’s first silver bullion coin was issued in 1988. The pattern repeats on the obverse, which features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign.
