The 1996 Canadian Silver Dollar celebrates the discovery of the McIntosh apple. Today's popular McIntosh apple owes its success to the efforts of three generations of the McIntosh family. John McIntosh, immigrating to Canada in 1796, discovered the original tree. His sons and grandson oversaw the transformation of the McIntosh from a locally celebrated apple to an important commercial orchard fruit.
Design
Designed by Canadian artist Roger Hill, the reverse of the coin symbolizes the McIntosh family's contribution to Canada's agricultural and horticultural growth and development.
The obverse features the effigy of Her Majest Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pedery-Hunt.
