The male's plumage is darker grey than that of the hen harrier and the female is also darker and more rufous. The adult male is sometimes nicknamed the "Grey Ghost", because of his striking plumage and spectral aura.
Design:
The obverse design features a bust image of Queen Elizabeth II and the phrase "ELIZABETH II D.G. REGINA".
This reverse designed by Arnold Nogy and engraved by Susan Taylor features a Northern Harrier perched on a set of Cattails on the side of a marsh.
