2012-D United States 25-Cent El Yunque/Puerto Rico National Park Quarter Coin (Brilliant Uncirculated)

In 2010, the United States Mint began issuing 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program.

The 2012 El Yunque America the Beautiful Quarter is the first of five quarter dollars to be struck by the US Mint in 2012 as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. Showcased on the reverse of this strike is a design emblematic of El Yunque National Forest located in the United States territory of Puerto Rico.

El Yunque National Forest was originally established as a forest reserve in 1903. In later years it was elevated to a national forest and finally was renamed El Yunque National Forest in 2007. Today, the forest encompasses a total area of approximately 28,000 acres.

Also issued by the US Mint featuring a reverse emblematic of the national forest are the El Yunque ATB 5 Oz Silver Coins. As implied by the name, these coins are struck from five ounces of silver and have an extremely large diameter of three inches. For comparison, the standard El Yunque circulating quarter dollar has a diameter of 0.955 inches.

Design

Obverse:
John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington (modified by William Cousins) is featured on the obverse. Also seen are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark.

Reverse:
The reverse of the first quarter of 2012 depicts a Coqui tree frog sitting on a leaf and a Puerto Rican parrot behind an epiphyte plant with tropical flora in the background.  Inscriptions are EL YUNQUE, PUERTO RICO, 2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM.  The reverse was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Master Designer Gary Whitley and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Michael Gaudioso.
