1994 Canadian $20 Aviation Series I: Vickers Vedette Sterling Silver Coin (Coin 10 of 10)

Powered Flight in Canada: The First 50 Years Coin Series

This 1992 Canadian $20 Vickers Vedette Sterling Silver Coin is part of the first ten-coin series commemorating the Powered Flight in Canada: The First 50 Years. Each coin commemorates an aviation hero and his achievements. These coins are composed of sterling silver and have a 24 karat gold covered cameo portrait of an aviation hero. This coin is the tenth coin in the series and features the Curtiss Canadian Vickers Vedette.

The Canadian Vickers Vedette played an important role in the history of Canadian aviation during the 1920's. This pusher biplane "flying boat" was developed mainly for forestry patrol and aerial photographic operations. Between the two World Wars, more Vickers Vedettes were manufactured in this country than any other model. It also became the first aircraft to be manufactured in Canada for commercial operators.

The coin pictures a gold plated portrait of Wilfred T. Reid, with the Canadian Vickers Vedette in the background.
