Powered Flight in Canada: The First 50 Years Coin Series
This 1991 Canadian $20 de Havilland Beaver Sterling Silver Coin is part of the first ten-coin series commemorating the Powered Flight in Canada: The First 50 Years. Each coin commemorates an aviation hero and his achievements. These coins are composed of sterling silver and have a 24 karat gold covered cameo portrait of an aviation hero. This coin is the fourth coin in the series and features the de Havilland Beaver.
The Beaver was designed and manufactured by de Havilland Aircraft of Canada after extensive market research to determine the needs of bush pilots and operators. It first flew in 1947. Its rugged, simple, all-metal construction and STOL performance made it ideal as a utility transport for bush-flying, military operations and agricultural work from polar to tropical climates. It is the most frequently produced Canadian design and is still used in over 60 countries in civil and military roles.
The coin pictures a gold plated portrait of Phillip C. Garratt, with the de Havilland Beaver.
