1996 Canadian $2 Polar Bear Toonie Proof Coin
The two dollar coin was issued in 1996 by the Numismatic Department of the Royal Canadian Mint to commemorate the introduction of the coin which replaced the two dollar bank note. Three different compositions were used to produce the numismatic two dollar coins of 1996.
Design
The reverse of the coin, by Canadian wildlife artist Brent Townsend, features the majestic polar bear roaming in his high arctic habitat in perfect harmony with a land of harsh beauty and eternal snow.
The obverse portrays the effigy of Her Majest Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pedery-Hunt.
