Design: The Lady's Slipper "Cypripedium Acaule" or Lady's Slipper was adopted as the provincial floral emblem of Prince Edward Island on April 25th 1947. The Lady's Slipper, an orchid, derives its name from the shape of the petals which form a pouch similar to a slipper. It blooms in late May and June and grows in shady and moist woodlands. The reverse features the flower in a design created by Canadian artist Henry Purdy. The obverse features an effigy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in a design created by artist Dora de Pédery-Hunt.
