1948 Canadian $1 Voyageur Silver Dollar Coin ICCS Graded AU-50

One Dollar - 80% Silver - George VI (1937 - 1952)

In early 1948, the Royal Canadian Mint was faced with an issue resulting from India's recent independence. The new obverse coinage tools, with the Latin phrase "ET IND: IMP" omitted to indicate that the King's titles had changed, would not arrive for several months, yet there was a great need for all denominations of coin. The Mint satisfied the demand by striking coins dated 1947 bearing a tiny maple leaf placed after the date to distinguish these unique 1948 issues.

Following the arrival in 1948 of the master tools with the new obverse legend, production of the 1947 Maple Leaf coinage was suspended. For the remainder of the year, coins were produced with the new obverse and the true date.

Obverse

Coin depicts the design of King George VI with the Latin inscription:
GEORGIVS VI DEI GRATIA REX meaning "George VI, by the grace of God, the King."
 

Reverse

Features a modern design by sculptor Emanuel Hahn, showing an Indian and a voyageur, a travelling agent for a fur company, paddling a canoe by an islet on which therer are two wind-swept trees. In the canoe are bundles of goods; the bundle at the right has HB, representing the Hudson's Bay Company. The vertical lines in the background represet the northern lights.
