In 1997, 2002, and each year since 2004, the Royal Canadian Mint has issued a one-dollar coin that depicts a different and unique image of an animal on the coin's reverse. These special loonies have limited mintages and are available only in the six-coin specimen sets.

This loonie coin was originally released in a Royal Canadian Mint yearly specimen set.


Design:

The obverse design features a bust image of Queen Elizabeth II and the phrase "ELIZABETH II D.G. REGINA".

The special 2002 Common Loon Dollar depicts a family of loons in their natural habitat. Beautifully rendered by internationally acclaimed Canadian wildlife artist Jean-Luc Grondin.
