1951 HIGH RELIEF Canadian 5 Cents Steel Nickel Coin ICCS Graded VF-30

The demand for nickel during the Korean War forced the Royal Canadian Mint to begin striking 5-cent coins on steel planchets. To achieve a suitable product, a lower relief design was adopted. A small unknown number of 1951 5-cent coins were inadvertently struck using the old High Relief design.

In the new lower relief design, the last 'A' of 'GRATIA' points between the rim denticles. In the old high relief design, the last 'A' in 'GRATIA' points to a rim denticle.

Large 5 Cents - George VI - Steel Coinage (1951 - 1952)

The obverse of all 12-sided issues have a bare-headed portrait of the King. The Korean War placed strong demand on nickel, forcing suspension of production of the commemorative 5-cent nickel before the end of 1951. In its place, steel coins of the beaver design were struck. It was found during trials that the current design was not as easy to strike in steel as in nickel, so a new lower relief version was created. However, some of the higher (initial design) relief versions had been produced by mistake.

Obverse

Coin depicts the design of King George VI with the Latin inscription:
GEORGIVS VI DEI GRATIA REX meaning "George VI, by the grace of God, the King".

Reverse

Features a beaver on a rock-studded mound of earth rising out of the water. At the left is a log which the beaver has been chewing.
